Each year, Lesbian Visibility Week offers an important opportunity to celebrate lesbian identities, uplift voices that have historically been marginalized, and reflect on the unique mental health experiences within this community. In therapy spaces, it is also a meaningful moment to deepen awareness, challenge assumptions, and create more affirming, nuanced care.
Visibility is not just about being seen - it's about being understood. For many lesbians, invisibility can show up in subtle and overt ways: assumptions of heterosexuality, erasure within broader LGBTQ+ conversations, or lack of representation in media, healthcare, and even therapeutic frameworks.
This kind of invisibility can contribute to:
Identity invalidation
Internalized stigma
Loneliness and disconnection
Delayed or complicated identity development
When someone's identity is consistently overlooked or misunderstood, it can shape how safe they feel showing up authentically - not just in the world, but in the therapy room too.
If you are searching for affirming care, please take a look at OutCare, where you can find local medical providers in your area.
Lesbian Visability Week can be an invitation to pause and reflect:
Where have I felt most seen in my identity?
Where have I felt erased or misunderstood?
What messages have I internalized about my identity?
What does authenticity look like for me right now?
Visibility is not a one-time achievement - it's an ongoing process of being witnessed, validated, and supported. In therapy, that means creating a space where clients don't have to explain or defend their identity, but can instead explore it freely.
This week is a reminder that being seen can be profoundly healing. And for many, therepy is one of the first places that truly happens. Let's make sure it's not the last.
